ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer has said that the nicotine liquid used inside e-cigarettes can pose a hazard to children, and that he now wants the liquid to be sold with child-proof caps.

The New York Democrat says poison control centers in New York have received nearly 70 calls so far this year relating to accidental poisonings from the liquid. That's compared to 46 calls in all of 2013.

E-cigarettes contain liquid nicotine. Some of the devices are refillable, and liquid is sold in separate containers.

Schumer said he wants the federal government to require e-cigarette makers to place child-proof caps and warning labels on the containers.

Schumer said Sunday that the liquid can be enticing to children because it often comes in flavors like bubble gum and chocolate.
