LAS VEGAS (AP) — Federal investigators are due to release results of a nearly yearlong probe of the crash of a racing aircraft into spectator box seats during last year's National Championship Air Races in Reno.
The National Transportation Safety Board, meeting in Washington, is expected Monday to review findings and reach conclusions about the cause of the September 2011 crash.
The pilot and 10 people on the ground were killed and authorities say more than 70 people were injured.
This year's Reno Air Races begin Sept. 12, and the board has already issued several preliminary reports and safety recommendations.
Authorities say 74-year-old pilot Jimmy Leeward of Ocala, Fla., modified his World War II-era P-51 Mustang fighter to increase speed.
Photos showed a tail stabilizer falling from the plane just before the crash.
