RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- The National Championship Air Races might be called something different this year.

Reno Air Racing Association President and CEO Mike Houghton tells News 4 the National Championship Air Races could have a new name this year, but what that name will be is up to Nevada Commission on Tourism.

The state's $600,000 sponsorship sent the National Championship Air Races soaring toward the required $2 million mark needed to pay insurance coverage this year. According to Houghton, they will present a sponsorship package to Nevada Commission on Tourism next week as a thank you. Included in that package is the title. Houghton says the state's website would be used in the name.

Commission on Tourism and Director Claudia Vecchio tells News 4 the commissioners will meet Aug. 15 at 3pm to discuss the sponsorship package and the name change. She says the $600,000 sponsorship from the state was a one time deal at that level.

Was that part of the deal all along...help with sponsorship only if they get to rename it? This is wrong, leave the name the same. The help shouldn't be conditional.
