Actor-turned-activist Robert Redford vowed never to enter the world of politics during a rousing talk in front of students in Massachusetts on Wednesday night.

The veteran actor discussed various aspects of his life and career, including his movie work and his environmental activism, in front of Middlesex Community College pupils as part of the educational institution's Celebrity Forum for guest speakers.

During the event at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium, Redford told the group he plans to step up his campaign against the use of horses in the meat industry, but dismissed suggestions he would ever swap activism for politics.

When asked whether he is harbouring any ambition to run for office, Redford replied, "Are you crazy?" before insisting the world of politics is too "dumbed down".

The event had been due to take place earlier this year, but had to be pushed back because of the actor's filming commitments.
