RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- We wanted to recognize a man who's been feeding our area's hungry for more than two decades. This weekend, Ray Trevino is being honored with the Mother Theresa Humanitarian Award, an award he's very proud of, but also an award he wants to share.

Trevino has donned the black apron at St. Vincent's for the past 22 years, keeping the kitchen in order and keeping thousands of northern Nevadans from going hungry.

Trevino's story started at the dining hall when he himself had fallen on hard times; it's a period of his life he describes as being "upside down."

"That brought me down to my knees," Trevino says. "And I asked the the Lord for help, and he kind of kicked me over to St. Vincent's and said 'this is what I want you do.'"

After just one day as a volunteer, Trevino's talent in the kitchen and kind heart stood out. He was hired on full-time, and has been heading the entire operation ever since.

He turned, what was basically, colored water and bread into healthy, hearty meals and gave a voice to thousands who couldn't--or wouldn't--speak up for themselves.

"The guy is just amazing," St. Vincent's Volunteer Hank Dever says. "You wouldn't believe some of the things he does. He'll take on the city. Whatever he thinks is going wrong, he'll speak up."

Trevino is just as quick to heap praise on the volunteers who help him get the job done. It gets tiring at times, but he says, when the day is done, the volunteers can't wait for the next one to start.

"You can't get tired doing God's work; you really can't," Trevino says.

Trevino will be honored this Saturday at 10:30 am, and the public is invited to attend.
