A viewer who did not want her name used she asked if it's true that the Reno Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority just gave the Safari Club a check for $250,000, even though the Safari Club just announced it is not coming back to Reno ?
Yes it is true. I spoke with Ben Mcdonald at the RSCVA about this today.
He says the tourism agency did hand over a check for $250,000 to the Safari Club during the group's visit here in January. That was an incentive that was agreed upon back in 2010 and was approved by the board of directors.
Mcdonald says its pretty standard to pay large groups an incentive to get them to come here.
The Safari Club convention brought in about 20 million dollars to the local economy so the incentive check is pretty small compared to that.
The fact is though, the Safari Club pocketed that money in January of this year, and then in April announced they were not coming back to Reno, at least not in the near future. So it may sound a little perplexing to hear about this amount of money being given to a group that's not returning to Reno but that is the explanation from the people who wrote the check.
