From the Ask Joe file one of our viewers has a question about our air quality.
Mike in Reno wrote in asking if the radon levels are higher than normal right now, and if so, he wants to know what the cause of that is ?
I checked with Phil Ullibarri at the Washoe County Health Department.
He says Reno and Nevada in general have a lot of naturally occurring radon. Ullibarri says when we have bad inversions like we've been experiencing, the levels tend to get worse. We had 12 red "no-burn" days during the month of December, to give you an idea about how bad our air quality has been.
Washoe County does have EPA monitoring equipment set up at their offices over on 9th street and they are in constant contact with the Envioronmental Protection Agency. The county says no alerts have been issued over radon levels
If you're concerned you can get a free radon test kit through February 28th . Just call 1-888 Radon10 (888-723-6610). If you call that number they will tell you the nearest location where you can pick one up. Again the offer is good through February 28th.
