Michael Gossette wrote in asking if home fire pits are legal in Washoe County.  He says he wants to put one in his backyard but he's not sure what the law says.

Its a good question since october is fire prevention month.
I checked with Tim Spencer , battallion chief with the Reno Fire Department.
He says yes, home fire pits are legal to use, as long as they are being used at intended.  You can't use them to burn trash, and you can't leave them unattended.
Make sure to use common sense and keep the fire a safe distance from the house or nearby brush or trees that could possibly catch fire.
Many of the portable fire pits that you can buy come with mesh covers and those can be a big help in preventing sparks from blowing in the wind and catching fire.
With that in mind...Enjoy your fire pit...And just make sure to keep an eye on it !
