Trish called up and asked why the elections department doesn't use R-T-C buses to give seniors free rides to their polling places on election day in an effort to get more people to vote ?
First I checked with Dan Burk, the Washoe County Registrar of Voters. He says he loves the idea and he's brought it up in the past. It is legal to offer people free rides to their polling places. And Burk says he thinks it would be a great way to increase turn-out.
But Michael Moreno, the spokesman for R-T-C says they've looked into it and decided it wouldn't be feasible or logistically possible to provide free rides on election day to all those who need one.
Dan Burk says in the past he's even suggested a system where people would get a receipt after they voted and they would use that receipt to show the bus driver they did in fact vote. So again, it has come up in the past and there are some people who support the idea but it doesn't look like its going to happen anytime soon.
