From the Ask Joe file we have a question from a viewer about energy costs, specifically propane. It's taking a big chunk out of our viewer's monthly budget.
Betty out in Wellington wrote in asking why Amerigas requires that she spend $500 every time she has her propane tank filled? Her question is why can't she buy propane in smaller increments so she's not out so much money?
I checked with Amerigas about this. They say they are the largest of supplier of propane in our area. They told me they do have a minimum which is 100 gallons per delivery and that costs about $500. If they delivered less than that the company says it would cost them too much to be making all of those deliveries and they wouldn't be able to cover their costs.
So that's their business decision and obviously they have to do what's best for them.
There may be some help out there however. The company referred me to the state's Energy Assistance Program.
This is a program that helps low income residents by paying part of their energy bills every month. You have to fill out an application and you can do that by calling them at 684-0731. Their office is located in Carson City. If you qualify, the progam will pay a percentage of your energy
I talked to them today they were very nice and very helpful. So Betty, it might a good option for you or your neighbors in Wellington.
