Question:

From the Ask Joe file, Burning Man is back in business now that the weather has cleared up, and one of our viewers has a question about getting to the event.

Victoria Aveiro in Stagecoach wrote in asking if the Reno-Tahoe International Airport is offering burners a ride to and from the Playa, and if so, her question is how is the airport helping those burners get all the water they need to drink?

Answer:

Joe checked with Heidi Jared, one of the spokespeople for the airport and it took about five seconds to a get a reply. She emphasized the airport is not busing people up to the Black Rock Desert.

However, there is a private bus service known as the Burner Express which started last year, and rides are available to and from the Burning Man event for $68 each way. You have to provide your own food and water, but they do have space to store it.

This year the ridership has doubled, according to Jared, so it is catching on, which is good news. Not only is it convenient it helps keep a lot of cars off the road.

Jared did say that even though the airport does not provide transportation to the event, they did end up with about 400 people who were temporarily stranded on Monday, because of the rain in the Black Rock Desert. The airport did hand out bottled water to those folks who were stuck waiting around with nowhere to go.

Again, for future reference, it is called the Burner Express, and it could be a safe and easy option if you are considering heading up to Burning Man.
