Question:

From the Ask Joe File a question one of our reporters brought to my attention concerning the elevators at UNR.
Ashley Cullins took a photo recently when she was on campus showing an elevator inspection certificate and it says the inspection was due quite a while ago: August 23rd of 1982 !

Answer:

Just to give you some perspective I was a junior in high school in 1982.
I checked with Jane Tors up at the university.  She says there are approximately 120 elevators on campus. It turns out, more than half of them have outdated state inspection certificates, and the rest have inspections due now.
So after we brought it up Tors says the university is working with the state to get those inspections done on all of the elevators to ensure they are safe.
Also I did talk to the state division which oversees these inspections.Part of the problem is their computer system is not able to track which elevators have been inspected, so they are hoping to get funding for a new software system that will track that for them.
We will keep looking into this and let you know when those inspections are completed.
