Steve in Reno commented that there have been a number of big marijuana busts in the news lately. He wants to know what happens to the pot when a big growing operation is broken up ?
I checked with Deputy Armando Avina over at the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
Typically the way it works is that if a big pot operation is uncovered, and there are no suspects to be found, a judge will go ahead and issue a destruction order and once the marijuana is weighed deputies will go ahead and take it out to a remote area and burn it.
If there are suspects and the case is headed to court then the marijuana plants must be kept as evidence until the case is resolved. Once the court case wraps up, then the marijuana is disposed of. Again, typically, by burning it.
Deputy Avina says they take great care to make sure whenever they do burn the pot, that it is done far away from any residents who might be impacted by the smell.
