News 4 viewer Judy Batchelor wrote in saying she was at a restaurant recently and noticed the employees who were making the food were not wearing gloves. She wants to know if there's a law requiring restaurant workers to wear gloves when making food ?
I checked with Tony Macaluso with the Washoe County Health Department. He says as it stands now resaurant workers are not required to wear gloves on the job. The only rules are that they wash their hands regularly.
However this could be changing soon. Macaluso says by the end of the year Washoe County is expected to adopt new rules to comply with changes approved by the FDA. There are a number of changes in store but one of the new rules will prohibit bare hand contact with ready to eat foods. Macaluso says every restaurant gets inspected on an annual basis and those which don't comply face serious fines.
Again, these new rules are expected to be in place by the end of this year.
