Richard Biniek from Sparks wrote in asking whatever happened to the rental car tax that was being collected to help pay for the baseball stadium ?
I checked with the City of Reno about this.
That rental car tax was approved in 2009 and it brings in more than a million dollars a year. Not as much as was projected but still a significant amount of money which is collected and distributed by washoe county .
Here's a breakdown of how much money has been raised through this tax.
$1. 5 million in 2009, and then $1.1 or $1.2 million each of the last three years. The county controller says all of that money is used to pay down the debt on the baseball stadium.
Now this week, the city approved a deal to pay a million dollars a year to help refinance the baseball stadium. And the county will also be asked to contribute. That money is on top of the roughly five million that's been raised through the car rental tax. So it is all part of the equation when it comes to financing the baseball stadium.
