Bob Wells wrote in saying he's concerned about so many people drinking and littering while rafting down the Truckee River. He wants to know whose job it is to patrol the river and enforce the alcohol laws ?
It depends on which part of the river you're talking about. The jurisdiction is divided between Sparks Police, Reno Police and the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
I checked with Deputy Armando Avina with the sheriff's office. They oversee the biggest stretch of the Truckee River. He says deputies do patrol the river area to watch for problems. He says they really depend on the public to let them know if problems are occurring. If they have a witness who saw the illegal activitiy occurring it is much easier to make an arrest or cite someone
If you see a crime occurring, whether it is child neglect, littering , a fight or public drunkeness, call the sheriff's office at 785-WCSO (9276) Or 911 if it is an emergency.
