Don Van Epps wrote in saying he's noticed what appears to be a police helicopter flying over his house every night from about 6:00 until 9:00. He wants to know why the crew needs to fly every night ?
I checked with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office which operates the Raven helicopter. Deputy Armando Avina says Raven was used in the search for a missing inmate from Storey County recently but he says it doesn't fly every night.
It sounds like the helicopter in this case belongs to the Nevada National Guard.
Its a U-H 60 Huey Blackhawk. Major April Conway with the Guard says they are doing some training right now, giving some of their younger pilots a chance to get some more flying experience, what they call local area training.
They'll be at it a while. Their group will be deploying to Afghanistan in February...So they'll probably be doing these night flights right up until then. Conway says the training is critical so the crews are ready once they are deployed.
