From the Ask Joe File a question from a viewer about a story we ran last night on news 4:
Ron Klonicke wrote in saying he just saw on the news that 30 trucks came in to set up 44 bowling lanes at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. He wants to know what happened to the "great bowling stadium" ? Why isn't it being used?
Ron, I checked with the RSCVA about this.
The reason is there are two major bowling tournaments going on.
The United States Bowling Congress Women's Cchampionships will run from April 12- July 7 . That's the one they are setting up for at the convention center.
The USBC Open Championships will run from March First through June 29. That will be held at the Downtown Bowling Stadium.
These are big events. The Women's Championships are expected to bring in about 25,000 people according to Ben Mcdonald at the RSCVA.
The Open Championships are expected to bring in around 52,000 bowlers.
So with more than 75,000 bowlers coming to town in a four month time period, they needed a second venue to accomodate everyone.
Also, the RSCVA estimates with hotel stays and a little gambling, the economic impact from these two tournaments will be about 200-million dollars so good news for our region.
