A viewer who did not want to leave her name name says she works at Sun Valley Elementary School and wants to know why the gates outside the school are unlocked in the morning before school and again after school ?
I checked with Mike Meiras, the chief of the Washoe County School Police Department.
He says the gates outside Sun Valley Elementary School are unlocked for about 15 minutes before school and 15 minutes after school. Other than that they are locked. Meiras says there is always a staff member monitoring the gates when they are open. The reason they leave them open during those times is that if they were locked students would have to walk on the street to get to the main entrance of the school and since there are no sidewalks in that part of sun valley Mieras says that would create another hazard to students so they feel its better to leave the gates open and have a staff member watch who comes and goes during that time.
