SPARKS, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- A middle school student has turned her love for her sister into a full blown campaign to protect kids with peanut allergies.
Recently News 4's Shelby Sheehan surprised Depoali Middle School student Melissa Gallagher during class with the award. Melissa and her family started something called "Peanut Patrol" four years ago to bring awareness and knowledge to the community about the dangers of peanut allergies. Her sister, Molly, has a life-threatening allergy to peanuts and Melissa is always acting as a second set of eyes and ears to protect her sister from having a reaction.
Melissa and her sister, Molly, are trying to bring awareness about bullying that often happens with children who have peanut allergies through the peanut patrol.
They also just held their fourth Sniff Out Peanuts bowling tournament that raised about $3,500 to help with different causes in the community.
