A Sparks elementary school teacher is always learning new ways to teach her students and because of her dedication to teaching, she is News Four's Excellence in Education Award Winner for the month of July.
Evening anchor Shelby Sheehan recently surprised 5th grade teacher Shelace Shoemaker during a school assembly at Kate Smith Elementary.
Not only is Shoemaker working towards her masters at the University of Nevada, she was one of only two teachers from the state to be invited to the Mickelson Exxon Mobil Teachers Academy in New Jersey this summer.
200 teachers are chosen for an intensive week of training that focuses on improving math and science curriculum.
Shoemaker says ever since her friend struggled with learning when she was young, she knew what she wanted to be, a teacher.
“I saw him struggle a lot, and so he was my motivator. I saw how hard he worked at home and couldn't get it and I wanted to help."
Congratulations to News Four’s Excellence in Education Award Winner Shelace Shoemaker!
