Most college students have their hands full juggling classes and their social lives but we found one student who also finds time to volunteer and this month we honor him with the Jefferson Award for community service.
Kevin McPherson devotes a great deal of his time to helping others.
He recently spent a year helping inner-city children in Philadephia as part of the Americorps teaching project.
He's also been involved in a number of community beautification projects. And he's tutored students at Hug High Shool in math and biology, helping them prepare for regional competitions.
Kevin says he picked up the volunteer spirit at an early age and it stuck with him.
"It's important for me to give back especially to people who are less fortunate. That's sounds kind of cliche but it was instilled in me when I was a little kid," Kevin said after receiving the Jefferson Award.
Kevin also volunteers on the U.N.R campus as a labratory assistant. We would like to congratulate Kevin for making a difference in his community. If you know of someone who deserves to be honored for their volunteer work, drop us a line here at the station, care of: Jefferson Awards, KRNV TV, 1790 Vassar Street in Reno, NV 89502.
