WASHINGTON (AP) — President Obama on Friday promoted his plan to raise the minimum wage in the United States to the nation's Democratic governors.
At a White House meeting Friday, Obama said an increase, quote, "is not just good policy, it also happens to be good politics."
Obama said raising the minimum wage is supported by independents, Democrats and Republicans. Obama wants to raise the wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour -- something he has already done for federal contractors.
The president said many Democratic governors are seeking increases in their own states. And he points out wages were increased in New Jersey by public referendum, even though it was opposed by New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie.
