OGDEN, Utah (AP) — Sentencing is scheduled Thursday for a Utah man who shot his wife's father during a Father's Day Mass at a church north of Salt Lake City last year.
Charles Richard Jennings Jr., 36, took a plea deal in November, pleading guilty and mentally ill in to charges of attempted murder and aggravated burglary. He also accepted a firearms violation.
A sentencing hearing last month was delayed so the judge get more information from the state mental hospital about where Jennings should serve his time.
Jennings' attorney has said that Jennings was having a psychotic episode the day of the shooting at the Catholic church.
The victim, 66-year-old James Evans, is back at work doing well physically. But Rev. Erik Richtsteig say Evans and the rest of the congregation remain scarred by the incident.
