This time of month we here at News 4, along with the University of Nevada and the Nevada Mining Association, like to recognize some of the top students in our area...
And this month's Reader Leaders award goes to Mr. Folkers' 6th grade class at Rita Cannan Elementary School.
The students read 531 books in a one month period, and they knew what they were reading, the class came back with a 90 percent retention rate on quizzes on the books.
In all, they read over eight million pages as a class, and one student read over a million pages on her own. Mr. Folkers says he's proud of how hard his kids have worked. “I think they've bought in that with reading, you can succeed, period...you can overcome any barrier, any obstacle in your life...because reading is the key to education, so to see them do this and buy into it and believe in it, it's really a proud moment for me.”
