CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — An amendment may be proposed to a Washoe County School District bill that would authorize the school board to impose a sales and property tax hike to fund maintenance projects.

The Assembly Taxation Committee is scheduled to take up AB46 on Tuesday. The measure as written would require the Washoe County Commission to raise the county sales tax rate by a quarter percent, and add a nickel to the property tax rate.

Lawmakers on Monday said an amendment is being considered that would instead "empower" the school board to impose the increases if the bill is passed by the Legislature.

Democratic Sen. Debbie Smith of Sparks says the change would allow the school board to make the ultimate decision on raising taxes after a public process.
