CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei is urging state lawmakers to cherish their time working directly for Nevadans, and he promises to continue fighting for public lands in the Silver State to be transferred away from federal control.

The former state lawmaker made his remarks during a joint session of the Legislature Monday night.

The Carson City Republican says Nevada faces challenges unlike any of the other 47 states in the continental U.S. because the federal government owns 86 percent of the land. He says his efforts in Washington have often centered on opening up that land for the state's interests.

Amodei was first elected to Congress in 2011 to fill the seat left vacant when Dean Heller was appointed to the Senate. Amodei then cruised to a victory in the 2012 general election.

Probably he wants to expand his firewood business; he'll let the feds keep the NV test site, maybe even groom lake. This is gravy-grabbin' at it's finest! The land the govt. "owns" belongs to all Americans, and a lot of that was ceded to the railroads back when to ensure the west was One. Ama-deus should focus on getting NV a better return on mining extraction and after-mining restoration so that natural resources are available to public land lessees and users (instead of deadly mineshafts and toxic pits). At least on mining, he could battle ol' hairy Read. Selling Federal land in LV purchased sensitive areas around Lake Tahoe. What's Am-a-Duece said 'bout Walker Lake? mine sump for CA? kNejerkVada!
