CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A former Republican assemblywoman in Nevada is being accused of illegally keeping unspent campaign money and then disposing of it improperly.

The complaint filed Wednesday by a Democratic activist accuses Heidi Gansert of Reno of keeping more than $100,000 in unused campaign funds after she left office in November 2010.

It claims that nine months later she gave the bulk of the funds, nearly $74,000, to her own political action committee, which then made donations to Republican candidates in the 2012 election.

Under Nevada law, public officers who do not seek re-election are supposed to dispose of unused funds within about two months. It also restricts how those funds are distributed.

The complaint filed with the secretary of state's office was first reported by Nevada political reporter Jon Ralston.
