CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — State lawmakers are questioning Gov. Brian Sandoval's plan to break up the Division of Parole and Probation and merge parole services with the Department of Corrections.
The Las Vegas Sun reports members of a joint budget subcommittee Tuesday questioned the need for the move, saying they didn't see cost savings or improved services for inmates.
Department of Corrections Director Greg Cox says under the existing structure, parole officers don't come to prisons to prepare inmates for release. He says the goal of the governor's plan is to ready inmates for their return to society.
Sandoval's proposal is also opposed by the Nevada State Law Enforcement Officers' Association. A group representative says the merger would open the door for future governors to turn over probation functions to counties.
