CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Gov. Brian Sandoval praised former UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian for his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame, saying it's a "well-deserved honor."
The 83-year-old Tarkanian, who led UNLV to the 1990 NCAA championship, was among 12 inductees honored at a ceremony Sunday in Springfield, Mass.
Tarkanian, who had heart surgery less than two months ago, came on stage with a walker and smiled as he received a standing ovation.
Sandoval issued a statement Sunday congratulating Tarkanian and calling him "a Nevada legend" who is beloved by players, fans and UNLV.
The governor says Tarkanian left "an indelible impression upon Nevada" in leading UNLV to four Final Fours and the national championship.
Tarkanian won 784 games in his career, 509 of them at UNLV. The Runnin' Rebels won at least 20 games every year but one in his 19 years at UNLV.
