A man has been fined after he lied to his girlfriend and told her he had been kidnapped over a $85 debt, in order to stay out partying instead of going home to her.

His girlfriend called the police after someone else picked up her boyfriend's phone and said he was being held against his will, and the officers spent almost seven hours searching for the man. The investigation included going through CCTV footage, house to house searches and even led to a man being arrested and later released without charge.

The man, when found, told the police it was a "wind up" but they instead arrested him for wasting police time, saying the only reason he wasn't taken to court was because they "have wasted enough time and resources on him already."

Detective Inspector Jo Clawson says, "Considerable resources and time went into finding this man, who it transpires made the entire thing up so he could stay out and party. This is without doubt one of the most foolish and irresponsible incidents I have been involved in."
