Adenoid surgery
Problems with inflamed adenoids are mostly due to the location of these glands. They are at the base of the eustachian (YOU-STAY-SHUN) tube which connects to the ear.
Adenoids
Adenoids are glands located high in the throat behind the nose. They aren't visible without special instruments. Along with the tonsils, their job is to intercept germs in very young children, which allows the body to create antibodies to resist similar infections throughout the rest of childhood and throughout life.
Congested, runny nose
It may seem odd that your nose can clog up and run at the same time, but these are the results of your body's natural defenses to a cold or allergies.
Endoscopic sinus surgery
When sinus problems don't respond to antibiotics, your doctor may recommend endoscopic (END-OH-SCOP-IC) sinus surgery. An endoscope is an instrument that uses the same fiber optic technology that transmits telephone and TV signals, allowing surgeons to see inside the sinuses themselves.
Losing your sense of smell
The human body doesn't work as well as it once did as you start to get older. Among the problems facing senior citizens is full or partial loss of the senses of taste and smell.
Nasal reconstruction
Endoscopic (END-OH-SCOP-IC) surgery, using fiber optics enabling the surgeon to see inside the body, has greatly reduced both the scarring and recovery time for many operations.
Nosebleeds
Nosebleeds are rarely dangerous. The bleeding is often caused by colds, a blow to the nose, dry air, or a simple scratch inside the nose. To stop a nosebleed, sit up and tilt your head forward.
Obstructions in the nasal cavity
Aside from its role in your sense of smell, the nose has three important functions as part of your respiratory system. It warms, humidifies and filters the air you breathe, but it can't do any of these things unless the nasal passages are clear.
Sinusitis
Sinuses are the air-filled cavities in the bones of the face and skull. The largest sinus cavities are in the forehead and cheeks on either side of the nose.
What are nasal polyps?
Polyps (POL-IPS) are round, soft smooth structures attached to the nasal passage by a slender stalk. They generally grow in clusters. When they grow large enough, they will obstruct your breathing and must eventually be removed.
