The way a closet's contents are stored can affect its safety. Children often think of closets as a play place, hide inside them and climb their shelves. Be sure your heavy objects are stored on sturdy shelves. A falling shelf could easily injure a child. You shouldn't stack objects in a closet unless they are properly boxed. If your closet has a light, be sure that nothing in the closet touches it. The light's heat could cause a fire. Chemicals shouldn't be stored in household closets. Put your paint and yard chemicals in your garage or shed. If you keep your closets organized, you'll avoid the avalanche of unsecured objects that comes when you rummage frantically.
