Older pets often experience incontinence and are unable to control bowel and bladder movements. Because this is a physical and not a behavioral problem, they should not be punished if an accident occurs. Instead, have your pet checked by a veterinarian in order to determine the problem. There are many reasons why pets may accidentally soil the house. In addition to old age, spayed females often experience some loss of bladder control. Also, many pets require more water as they age in order to cleanse the toxins out of their bodies. For more information on house soiling and older pets, contact your veterinarian or animal care specialist.
