Brian Kulpin with the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority tells News 4 that the helicopter went down around 12:09pm. Kulpin says two helicopters were flying together when one pilot lost contact with the other and flew back around and found the wreck near the Reno-Stead Airport.
Kulpin says the helicopter that went down was a kit helicopter, a chopper that people build on their own and it was just certified last week.
FAA officials just arrived on scene along with the medical examiner. News 4 can confirm that one male is dead and he was a local of the Reno-Tahoe area.
RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MYNEWS4.COM)-- UPDATE: According to Reno Police Lt. Mohammad Rafaqat the pilot was the only person injured in the helicopter crash Sunday. RPD responded to the helicopter crash just west of Reno-Stead Airport shortly after noon on Sunday. Lt. Rafaqat says the identity of the pilot is not known at this time.
The type of the helicopter is unknown. The cause of the wreck is under investigation. Lt. Rafaqat says "no specifics known of the crash."
Emergency crews are responding to a helicopter crash reported around noon on Sunday near the Reno-Stead Airport.
According to Reno Police, there is one fatality.
