CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A 9-year-old boy says his pet dog named Cheeto is beautiful, strong and independent — just like the people of Nevada,

Those were the arguments Brenlon Dillard made Monday to members of the Senate Government Affairs Committee, seeking to name the blue Weimaraner Nevada's official state dog.

The committee took no action on SB225.

But the Reno third grader ran into resistance from a member of a long-time Nevada family, whose grandfather was a sheepherder.

Neena Laxalt proposed an amendment substituting the border collie instead of Weimaraner as the state dog.

The daughter of former Gov. and U.S. Sen. Paul Laxalt says sheepherders are part of Nevada's culture and the familiar black and white breed has earned the distinction should a state dog be named.

I'm sure that Cheeto is a great animal and kudos to Mr. Dillon (Brenlan?) for being his champion and bringing his passion to the state legislature, but Ms Laxalt is right. The Border Collie, the proven smartest breed in the world, should be the Nevada state dog. Sheep, cows, ducks, or geese; Border Collies have POWER. They're more than just dogs. They're partners.

Weimaraners are great dogs. I have been in every state & 28 countrys as a professional athlete & a business man & have seen these fine animals everywhere & I have been absolutely & totally impressed. I am a fanatic dog lover for decades & have never found a dog that I couldn't hug.I spent 16 years as a volunteer at 2 animal shelters, ANIMAL HAVEN in Merriam, Ks & the SPCA in sacramento , Ca & worked w/ abused & beaten dogs & got everyone turned around & adopted out. Kansas City, Mo., newa did a special on me several years ago. These dogs are one of the few that I really like. They are intelligent, clean, friendly, gentle & very playfull animals. You can't go wrong w/ this animal, high marks all the way around.
