From the Ask Joe file, a question from a viewer about a controversial development project that has been on and off for the past 15 years, and is surfacing once again.
Mike Bassi said he has heard rumors that the City of Reno is considering annexing the old Ballardini Ranch to approve multi-use, high density construction. Mike said he searched the council minutes and he cannot find anything, so he is hoping we can help clarify the situation for him.
There is some new activity on this issue. The area consists of about a thousand acres in southwest Reno, just southwest of Mccarran Boulevard.
Fred Turnier, the city's Community Development Director, said the owner of the land, JLN Trust, is seeking a Master Plan amendment to switch from a special planning area to single-family residential. The owner is looking to build 1,875 homes in that area.
Here are some dates to keep in mind. The Planning Commission will hear the Master Plan request on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the City Council chambers. Also, the Reno City Council is tentatively set to consider annexing that land at its meeting on July 2.
A lot of people have fought development in that area for years, hoping to keep it as open space. If the Master Plan amendment is approved, it would be considered a land use designation. Any specific zoning issues would be decided down the road.
