From the Ask Joe file, one of our viewers has a question about the immigration issue, and a possible local connection.
Nicole wrote in asking why the attempt to place 200 immigrants at the Rite of Passage School in Yerington is not being reported on?
Joe checked with Lyon County Manager Jeff Page about this issue. There was an urgent request by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to provide housing in Yerington for illegal immigrant children from Central and South America.
The request was to place them at the Silver State Academy, otherwise known as the Rite of Passage School. However, the director of that facility declined the request, in part, because he said there is not enough room to accommodate the large number of children who would need housing.
The letter from Lawrence Howell went on to say that any decision to provide in-state services will be made collaboratively with state and local leaders. He said, given these considerations, Rite of Passage has opted not to include Silver State Academy as a location for refugees.
So, while there was a request to house some of those children in Yerington, the request was not approved.
