Cindy wrote in asking why the University of Nevada has a women's track team but no men's team for track and field?
According to the folks up at the university the Wolfpack did have a men's track team that dated all the way back to just after World War I. The program continued all the way up until the early 1990's. But the men's program was cut after the 1993 season because of budget cuts and Title IX, a federal requirement that the number of male and female athletes be proportionate to the overall make-up of the student body.
Here are a few highlights of the Nevada men's track team over the years:
Brandon Rock competed in the 800 meters 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Kamy Keshmiri won three NCAA discuss titles and Joe Keshmiri competed in three Olympic games for his native Iran. All were proud members of the Nevada track team back in the day.
Will men's track ever make a comeback at Nevada ?
Not any time soon. For now the athletic department says they're more focused on supporting their existing programs.
