PLACERVILLE, Calif. (AP) — El Dorado County sheriff's detectives are investigating how a 7-year-old boy was injured while shooting at his family's home-built gun range.

The Sacramento Bee reports the boy was flown to a hospital for treatment after the incident Saturday in the Georgetown area.

In a statement Monday, sheriff's officials said the boy, with the help of his father, was shooting at targets with a .22-caliber youth rifle while another adult was also firing nearby.

The statement said as family members looked on, the 7-year-old grabbed his chest in pain. The father found a small hole in the child's t-shirt and found the boy was bleeding from the chest.

The boy's condition was not known early Tuesday.

Ricochet. WHY was a seven year old at a shooting range? !!! I didn't pick up a b b gun until I was ten. And then I was still too naive to know what I was doing when I shot my Uncle's pinky finger. He was 9 at the time. He held up a target and told me to see if I could hit it. Luckily I only stung his finger and didn't shoot his eye out. We laughed about it but it could have turned out differently.
