CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Tens of thousands of Nevada immigrants living in the United States without legal permission will be able to get behind the wheel and travel the roads of the Silver State legally under a new law that takes effect with the new year.

SB303 was passed overwhelmingly by the 2013 Nevada Legislature and signed into law by Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval, Nevada's first governor of Hispanic descent. It's one of 45 news laws that took effect Jan. 1.

Starting Thursday, the Department of Motor Vehicles will begin taking applications for and issuing driver authorization cards to Nevada residents who cannot meet citizenship requirements for a standard driver's license or identification card.

Nevada becomes one of 13 states and the District of Columbia with programs or plans to offer similar cards.

Anyone else think this is why the computers are down at the DMV State wide? Ha Ha Ha Wonder who sabotaged them? Good on you, who ever you are. Darn illegals should be deported when they go to get their driver's card.

Rickerwill; I'd rather have them driving around in their HOME COUNTRY,where they BELONG. You ARE right that the Liberals have forced this garbage through, just as they'll find a way to force the Amnesty of from 1 to 3 Million Illegal Immigrants through,to reinforce their voting base for the next elections, since they really don't have ANYTHING GOOD to campaign on anymore.

@retired USA, YES (road test), YES (written test - every year), and YES (insurance - same proof as you and me). So, would we rather they are out there driving around with no proof of their abilities and no proof of insurance? Have you had an accident with an uninsured motorist? The claims process is no fun and if your own insurance company finds that little exception or exclusion to deny you coverage, even your Uninsured Motorist coverage won't compensate you for the accident. How much better that we hold these illegal immigrants accountable for SOMETHING? Also, Governor Sandoval did not draft this law and the Dem majority in both houses of our legislature managed to override all opposition, anyway, so place blame where it is due. Don't burn your registration card just yet. :>)

So are these illegals required to take drivers training, then a road test at DMV, then written test? Will they be required to have insurance to get a lic? Having THESE illegals on the streets with drivers lic, can't speak english and in most cases don't read English so how they going to read signs???? Very, very poor law, I'm a republican and I'm ashamed to be affiliated to the Republican party now. WRONG on all counts.....Look out drivers in Nevada......our insurance rates will now go up because of THESE illegals.

NO LEGAL STATUS while they await expulsion and deportation. UNCONSTITUTIONAL for State's to allow ANYTHING FOR ILLEGALS.

What a joke. Wrong on all levels, and certainly will come back and bite them in the butt. Gives me more reason not to vote. They have all proven to be greedy and stupid.

Big thanks go out to our clown Governor and agenda driven state legislators for rewarding "illegal aliens". I am sure you believe this will bring revenue and make our roads safer but it won't. If someone has broken the law by entering the country illegally they sure are not going to follow the law by getting licensed and insured. Gov. Sunny and state legislators quit acting like prostitutes and quit rewarding criminals!!

And here we have another example of our government crumbling to those that are by law, "CRIMINALS" and allowing them rights that they have not earned. Thank you NEVADA for showing me that this place is despicable as well and not worthy of having AMERICAN CITIZENS living here. Gov. Sandoval, you are now a disgrace to go along with the rest of the puppets in politics. Looks like another cabinet on the list of disrespectful politicians who don't have our best interest. DAMN SHAME!!!!!

So, these people can't legally qualify for a drivers license since they are illegal? So, they are here illegally and that makes them 'criminals”; right?? We are told that driving is a privilege and are required to prove who we are and that we are legally living here for a drivers license. They are now releasing all of these potentially uninsured persons on the road so how much will my insurance rates go up to cover them? Political correctness today dictates that we must hold our hands out to all even if they are here illegally, criminals! Wonderful!!!!!!
