ELKO, Nev. (AP) — A 20-year-old Elko man who was struck by an Amtrak train after he apparently fell asleep on the railroad tracks west of town has been flown to a Salt Lake City hospital with serious leg injuries.

Elko County Sheriff Jim Pitts says Nathanial Devin Deleon had passed out on the tracks Wednesday evening near Old Highway 40. He says Deleon awoke at the last minute but couldn't get out of the way of the train that hit its emergency brakes going 79 mph.

Amtrak reported the accident at 8:15 p.m.

In addition to his legs, Deleon suffered injuries to his thumb and elbow.

Elko Municipal Court records show Deleon was found guilty of minor in consumption of liquor when he was 18 years old.
