CARSON CITY, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- An armed and dangerous inmate is on the loose after escaping from the Stewart Conservation Camp late Tuesday night.

It is unknown how the inmate escaped, or whether or not he was here at the camp or on work camp duty at the time he got away.

The escaped inmate is 36-year-old James McDowell. He is 6-0, weighs 180 pounds, and with brown hair and green eyes. He is currently serving 15-48 months for a vehicle theft he committed in Washoe County.

McDowell has been incarcerated at the Conservation Camp since May 9. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said work camp inmates are very common throughout Carson City. Furlong also said McDowell is a low-level offender, but as a precautionary measure, he is considered to be armed and dangerous.

"Point and time, he is an escaped inmate and so we have to take that worst of all scenarios and be postured for that," said Furlong. "It's important to realize that prior to his escape, inmates assigned to the work camps are considered very low risk."

Furlong said low-risk inmates do escape every once awhile, especially when they are out on work duty. Law enforcement is actively looking for McDowell. If you see him, you are asked not to make contact, but to call police right away.

Furlong said there is no way to determine if McDowell is still in Carson City. But Furlong said once McDowell is captured, he will never go back to a prison camp and will face additional charges.
