RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- A disturbing Facebook post has been circulating on the internet, bringing national attention to a local police department.
The comment appears to be from a future Washoe County deputy making threats to followers of a website aimed at holding law enforcement accountable. The post in question is full of expletives and threats of mass murder, and shows a figure of authority abusing his power.
Many are concerned that a person like this would be an officer of the law. We tracked down the Reno man whose face is on that post, and he says his Facebook page was hacked.
"That's absurd," said Darren Redding. "If it really was me, which it isn't. But if it were, I wouldn't tell a whole bunch of people where I live after insulting them like that and making threats like that. That would just be dumb."
The post says Redding was set to start training with the Washoe County Sheriff's Department, but Redding says he never even applied or had the intention to be in law enforcement. The Sheriff's Office also has no record of Redding.
"We have no employee here by that name, and that includes deputy recruits," said Washoe County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Bob Harmon. "This is not the kind of behavior that is characteristic of the Washoe County Sheriffs Office, nor will it be tolerated. It's a deplorable hoax."
The Sheriff's Department is continuing to investigate who made that post and Redding says he has received numerous death threats online, some even posting his home address.
