RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Nearly eight months after a Reno teen was shot and killed on Wedekind Road his murder is still unsolved.
17-year-old Ryan Connelly was a new dad, a brother and a son who wanted to serve his country in the Navy. But his life was cut short when he was shot and killed in July, and his family came to News 4 to try and find some answers.
"They took him away from his daughter and from all of us and we have no idea who it is," said Deana Crook, Ryan's mother.
Ryan was walking home from Go Mart on the night of July 7. Deana says they don't know much except he was shot and went into a neighbors apartment for help.
"A neighbor came and got me and said Ryan's hurt come quick," Deana said.
She says she never could've imagined what she was about to see - her son bleeding on a kitchen floor.
"I knew it was too late but I tried to save him, but I couldn't," Deana said.
Ryan died that night, and nearly eight months later his family still doesn't have justice for what they say is a tragic, random act of violence.
"He wasn't a gang member. He wasn't on the streets dealing drugs," Deana said. "He was a good little boy."
Reno Police Lieutenant Mohammad Rafaqat says they're still following leads.
"Homicide investigations don't close," Lt. Rafaqat said. "They're always open and active."
Deana says the police have been doing everything they can but they need the community's help.
"Somebody had to have seen or heard something," Deana said. "I know you may be scared but you don't have to say who you are. Just think about what we're going through."
Lt. Rafaqat says there is still time to come forward.
"It is never too late to give information about a case if somebody has it," Lt. Rafaqat said.
Any information - even something that seems small - could help.
"We just want justice for Ryan," Deana said.
"Hopefully someday we'll have some answers for them," Lt. Rafaqat said.
Until that day Ryan's family is struggling to heal, but once the case is closed they can begin.
"We're going to be able to grieve the way we need to grieve, and the family can celebrate that this person is off the street and Ryan we did it for you," Deana said.
