South Lake Tahoe, CA (KRNV & MyNews4.com)-- South Lake Tahoe police are reporting a fatality after a drunk driver struck a pedestrian yesterday evening.
According to police, at about 6:45 PM on February 22nd, a car hit a pedestrian in front of the Taco Bell at 2681 Lake Tahoe Blvd. When officers arrived on scene they found an unconscious 51-year-old victim lying in the roadway. Officers attempted CPR until the man was taken by ambulance to Barton Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Officers report that the driver of the vehicle was Gregory Stearns, a 49-year-old from South Lake Tahoe. Stearns had a suspended driver's license from a prior DUI arrest. Stearns was arrested and is charged with driving under the influence as driving with a suspended licence.
Police say the pedestrian may also have been intoxicated and was not using a crosswalk when he was hit.
