HAYWARD, Calif. (AP) — Police say a Northern California family didn't call 911 for more than five hours after a 10-year-old girl was shot because they thought she had started menstruating.

The girl was sleeping in her Hayward home early Thursday when a stray bullet from a nearby shooting wounded her in the buttocks.

Sgt. Mark Ormsby says when the girl woke up in pain, she thought she had started her period. Her parents found no indication she had been shot when they took her to the bathroom.

Ormsby said when she woke up for school and was still in pain, her parents inspected her bed and saw bullet holes.

The girl's doctor told investigators the bullet's entry wound was small and could have been easily overlooked if the family thought she was menstruating.

People who slam with the old "Dem" or "Rep" nonsense just doesn't have anything to really say. And if you think you do ~ I challenge you to stay strictly to the topic. That'll answer the question REAL quick. FYI - Girls of 10 are starting their period All The Time. My daughter was later, like 12, but she knew about 5 friends who started that early. Yes...we are altering things all the time by the stupid and ridiculous that we allow to be considered acceptable.

retired51; And you must be one of those idiot Democrats that thinks it would be NORMAL for a 10 YEAR OLD to be starting to undergo a change that typically starts several years later. Even if it WAS her period, they should have at least been trying to find out why it started that early. And who's to say it wasn't a hormone or vitamin excess that might have caused it. Regardless of the cause of bleeding at that age she should have been checked by a Dr. ASAP.,not eventually.

What a mean thing to say. How do you know when is normal or average? An average is just that the average. All sorts of data fall outside of the average. 10 is not average but it is possible.

10 years old? Come on now. Normal is 12 or 13 years old to start menstruating. Unless she drank a lot of milk that had the hormone stuff in it that they give cows.
