LOS ANGELES (AP) — The grandparents of an 8-year-old boy whose battering death led to a review of Los Angeles County's child welfare system have filed a wrongful-death lawsuit, saying officials missed repeated opportunities to save the child.
The Los Angeles Times reports Monday the suit names the county's Department of Children and Family Services and three other agencies. The lawsuit claims wrongful death and civil rights violations, and seeks unspecified damages.
Gabriel Fernandez was found last spring at the family home with a fractured skull, three broken ribs and other injuries. His mother and her boyfriend have been charged with murder.
The suit comes after a county review that found repeated breakdowns in monitoring Gabriel's care and failures to follow up on complaints and warnings that the boy was being mistreated.
