Washoe County, NV (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Heavy smoke in northern Nevada is causing unhealthy air quality. Health Officials encourage people to stay indoors.
According to Daniel Inouie with Air Quality Management the particulate matter levels increased very dramatically in just a couple of hours today, August 22, 2013, causing the air quality to go from "moderate" to "unhealthy."
Doctors at Renown say they have seen an increase in patients in the Emergency Room since the first batch of smoke started moving in last week with the American Fire.
John Watson, a physician at Renown says it's important to seek treatment if the smoke is heavily impacting you, "If you really start having difficulty breathing, if Urgent Care is close by then they cant get you on a Nebulizer, that's great. But, if you're having more and more difficulty with things then the Emergency Room can provide you a higher level of care."
How to protect yourself from the heavy smoke:
1. Stay indoors
2. Keep windows and doors closed
3. Run your air conditioner on the "recirculate" setting
4. Don't use vacuum's or gas stoves
