RENO, Nev. (AP) — The U.S. Interior Department says it is reviewing a recent scientific report on the government's wild horse management program to explore "additional opportunities for population control."

The statement came in response to a letter to new U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell by 30 U.S. Representatives, asking her to quickly reform the management program.

The lawmakers say the program and its spiraling budget have created an "untenable situation" for both the mustangs and taxpayers.

A recent scientific review recommended that the government invest in widespread fertility control of the mustangs and let nature cull any excess herds instead of spending millions to house them in overflowing holding pens.

There are an estimated 37,000 free-roaming wild horses and burros on federal land in the West.

Our entire government is out of control. They have a 10% approval rating yet the same sorry POs keep getting re-elected. Time to clean house from the local city council all the way to the top.

I'd like to know where the figure of 37k came from?? The report from the AS states quite clearly that the BLM has no proof, or even a viable method for obtaining this number. It is a fictional number, as there has never been any documented proof. And who decides what an excess herd means? This is no easy task for Secretary Jewell, but the ball is in her court now and it's time to make a move. The natives are growing restless. These mustangs and burros need to be released from the BLM prison system. They are in such a sad state of neglect, and the geniuses who have them in holding dont provide for proper shelter in the sweltering heat. Their water is slimy, their hay is moldy, and they're constantly being chased with trucks by BLM employees as a means of entertainment, as if they're circus freaks. I think the torture has gone on long enough, at the American taxpayers expense. This is not what America stands for.

additional opportunities? They don't need additional opportunities until they clean up the mess they make of horses in holding and animal cruelty. Anyone else doing it would've been arrested!

The Interior Dept. is ignoring the recommendation of the scientific report that said the population of the wild horses must be considered as to genetic viability and the use of population control. At present there is no excess of wild horses so population control must not be used. The report also said the roundups and removals are causing the horses to breed more . This is nature's way to avoid extinction which has been the goal of the Bureau of Land Management. There needs to be a Congressional investigation of the DOI/BLM.The 50,000 wild horses in holding need to be returned to the 22.2 million acres taken from them.

37,000??? Show me the the document on that!!! The horses at Palomino valley are sick, living in their own waste and in the hot desert sun with no shelter! Their poor hooves are sleds! Inhumane treatment at it's worst! The BLM is out of control and the secretary needs to clean that house with a proverbial ax!
